"Summer Blogging Journey Week Three Day One"

Day 1:  "White Picket Fences (1950s)"

Activity 1:  "Meat & Three Veg"

It was common for women in the 1950s to stay home with their children and raise their family. They were called 'Housewives'. Many housewives followed a simple rule when they prepared the evening meal: the 'Meat and Three Veg' rule. This meant that they prepared dinners that included three different vegetables and a type of meat (e.g. beef, lamb, or chicken).

For this activity I am going to decide if I think that the 'meat & three veg' rule is a good one.(Would I like i?Would I enjoy eating a typical 1950s dinner?Why/Why not?)

-For me, I think that 'Meat & Three Veg' rule is a good one because I like this rule. Yes I think that I would enjoy eating a typical 1950s dinner because I love eating veges, It delicious, very simple to make and it good for our health.

Activity 2:  "What's In A Name"

During the 1950s the population of NZ grew by 400,000 people. That is huge. In fact, so many people refer to this period in our history as the 'baby boom! Popular baby names in 1950s NZ were:

Girls                           Boys
Christine                    John
Susan                     David
Margaret                    Peter
Judith                         Michael
Jennifer                     Robert

ON this blog, I'm gonna provide a three 'girls' name and 'boys' name that are currently popular in my school.

-The currently popular names in my school are:

Girls                        Boys
Mele                        Sione
Elizabeth                 Ben
Soana                      David

Bonus Activity:  "Snail Mail"

In the 1950s, most people communicated with one another by writing letters. According to the NZ history website, New Zealanders sent over 200 million letters and postcards between 1950 and 1960. This is an average of 87 letters per person!

For this activity, I'm gonna imagine that I am living in NZ in the 1950s. I'm going to design the front of a postcard that I could send to a friend of mine. I'm gonna try to include elements of Kiwiana in my design (e.g Pohutukawa trees, Hokey Pokey ice-cream, etc.) and I am also going to describe what I have drawn on my blog beneath the picture.

On the front of my postcard I have drawn a green fern to represent the fern on NZ flag, I have include a Pohutukawa tree to represent NZ trees a beach and a seagull bird.

Hi Seniola,

You've done a lot of work today - good for you!

I'm reading your blog from my home in Canada. I really appreciate your post card design because you've been so careful about choosing aspects of New Zealand that are very beautiful. My daughter, Rachel, lives in Auckland and so I've visited your country and it's just lovely.

I grew up in the 1950's and so I grew up on a 'meat and 3 veg.' diet. It was healthy, I agree with you. But I must admit that I actually prefer salads and less meat.
I'm glad that I get to choose my diet now!

Isn't it interesting how the style of names for children has changed dramatically over the past few years. What is your favourite name for a boy and/or a girl?

I hope you'll keep working hard at the blogging program and I hope that you're having a wonderful summer break!

Kia Ora Seniola,

What an awesome post!

Activity 1: "Meat & Three Veg": I totally agree with you as I think this rule is a wise one because ultimately promotes a healthy and well balanced diet. Furthermore you can use meat and three veg in many different dishes such as pasta, lasagna, roasts, and salads too.
For the future I want you to consider adding a picture to promote a visual reference to your post.

Activity 2: "What's In A Name": the list of popular names in your school made me smile because it does reflect so well how Auckland became a multicultural city where you can find Pacific, Indian, Chinese and English children everywhere. I am wondering how these children will name their children in the future?

Bonus Activity: "Snail Mail": You did a fantastic design for your post card! I liked because it represent the quintessential of the New Zealand summer with the beach, the clear ocean and the pohutakawa trees, and even the annoying seagulls. :0) This is a very classic kiwiana scene, well done!

Keep up the great work!

Kia kaha,
Patricia
